presidentLate Hemchandra Roy and Late Sheelabati Roy envisioned the foundation of a school in Durgapur. Their idea and will profoundly influenced their sons and daughters – Late Sri Goswamidas Roy, Sri Dwijapada Roy, Dr. Rabindra Nath Roy, Sri Lakshmi Narayan Roy, Smt Urmilla Konar, Smt Sulakshna Konar and Smt Satyarani Roy. In the year 1988, under the direct and active patronage of Dr. Rabindra Nath Roy and his wife Dr. (Mrs.) Protima K. Roy, a Professor of Science and Education at Drury University USA  and encouragement of the brothers and sisters ‘Hemchandra Sheelabati Memorial Educational Trust’ was formed.

The HSMS took its first step in the academic session 1995-96.

              Dr. Rabindra N. Roy, our Founder President, was born in a family having rich a cultural heritage in the city of Durgapur in the year 1939. In 1961 he obtained his M.Sc. degree in Chemistry with specialisation in Physical Chemistry from Jadavpur University, Kolkata and proceeded to the United States for advanced studies at Louisiana State University, and was awarded Ph.D. degree in 1966. He received D. Sc from Jadavpur University in 1999.

In 1966 he joined Drury University(then Drury College), U.S.A. as an Assistant Professor, where, by virtue of his dedication and scholastic activities he rose to the highest position in the department adorning the Chair. He served as the Chairman and Head of the department of Chemistry for about 30 years. Dr. Roy a recipient of the National Award 1998 by the American Chemical Society, guides his students to perform original and successful research funded by a grant of $ 4.5 million from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the American Chemical Society and other sources.

about2He has co-authored with his students more than 575 presentations, articles and publications in reputed journals besides having research collaboration with 25 universities around the world including a joint project with a Nobel Laureate,Dr. Johann Deisenhofer. He has guided students on 19 educational tours to India and other countries. Dr. (Mrs.) Protima K. Roy, our Vice-President, Professor of Education and Child Development, has been teaching at Drury University since 1975. She received B.Sc (Hons.) & M.Sc degree in Zoology from the Presidency College, Kolkata, India, did her Ph.D. from University of Florida in 1974. Dr. Roy participated in the British Science Education workshop at Manchester Polytechnic in 1977. In 1980, she attended a workshop on Early Childhood Education in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. In 1981 she spent sabbatical leave at Cornell University. She completed a course in the Summer Institute on Moral and Civic Education, sponsored by Professor Lawrence Kohlberg at Harvard University in 1984, and in 2003. Dr. Roy has published papers in various journals. Also, she participated in the leadership development programme at Yale University in 1998 and 1999. She made many presentations at different international and national organizations. She has actively involved several undergraduate and graduate students in various research activities. She received the Faculty Research and Creative Activities Grant in 1979 from Drury University. She was also awarded an Eisenhower grant in the fall of 1994 to train secondary science teachers in water quality monitoring techniques. In 1995, Dr. Roy was awarded the prestigious faculty award for scholarship by Drury University. In 2001, she received a CIC/NSF grant titled “Education Reform: A Developmental Partnership Between Public Schools and Drury University”.More than twenty-five undergraduate science majors worked with students from Pipkin Middle School and Central High School under her guidance.
