Hem Sheela Model School, Durgapur initiated its Silver Jubilee Celebrations and commemorated the 157th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda on 14th January 2020. The plenary speaker on this occasion was Swami Vedatitananda Maharaj from Shilpa Mandir, Ramakrishna Mission and Belur Math. Among the dignitaries present were SDM, Durgapur, Director of NIT, Durgapur and Principals of other eminent schools.The programme started with lighting of the lamp followed by the curtain raiser. A short cultural programme was staged befitting the occasion. Swami Vedatitananda Maharaj in his address to the students said, “What we ned is western science coupled with Vedanta and Brahmacharya as our guiding motto and shraddha or faith in oneself.” Later in the day, he addressed the Hem Sheela Faculty. The Hem Sheela family had a grand initiation on the 25th year of its odyssey.
International Bangladeshi Cricketer in Hem Sheela Model School
Mehidy Hasan Mirza an International Bangladeshi Cricketer visited Hem Sheela Model School on 26th November 2019. The students heartily welcomed him in the traditional style. The young cricketer addressed the scholars and expressed his joy coming to HSMS.
Dr. Marc Madovs visit
On 22nd November 2019, senior students and teachers of Hem Sheela Model School Durgapur were immensely impressed by a workshop conducted by Dr. Marc Madov (Chancellor’s professor university of California. His presentation on “CD Fludics and carbon Memes was extremely informative, engaging and educational. It couldn’t get much better than that.
The three day (5th – 7th Aug 2019) enriching, informative and enlightening INSA Fellow Lecture Programme at HSMS, Durgapur in collaboration with Indian National Science Academy came to a close today. The programme commenced with a lecture on “Scaling Laws – the Science of Miniaturization: Engineering of the Future by Prof. Amitabha Ghosh, Honorary Scientist, INSA, New Delhi and Honorary Distinguished Scientist, IIEST, Shibpur. Understanding Scaling Laws help us to comprehend natural phenomena better and engineer appropriate devices in future. This was followed by an interaction of students with the eminent INSA Scholars. It was stimulating with enthusiastic participation.
Prof. Ghosh presented another lecture in the second session on Archaeoastronomy: Time keeper of Ancient India. He elucidated on how the position of planetary bodies can be used to precisely date ancient events, especially in Indian history.
The grand event came to an end with feedback from participating schools and valedictory session conducted by the Founder-President, HSMS, Dr. Rabindra N. Roy, Principal Ms. Anindita Home Choudhury and the eminent scientists. All the participating students were awarded Participation Certificates and the general consensus was that it was a pioneering and much needed event for the students’ community. Each member of the audience felt enriched and honoured to be a part of such a programme.
More such events are required in the future to spread scientific awareness among the future citizens of the country and put India at the forefront.
The second day of the three day (5th – 7th August 2019) INSA Fellow Lecture Programme at HSMS Durgapur in collaboration with Indian National Science Academy got off to a stimulating start with a lecture on ‘Music of the Primes’ by Prof. Ashok Kumar Mallik, former Professor of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur. It was about the enchanting world of prime numbers. Prof. Suman Chakraborty , Dean of Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy and Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Technology at IIT Kharagpur presented a lecture on ‘Doing Wonders in Medical Devices with Paper, Pencil and Eraser’. He highlighted the use of science and technology to make health care affordable to the rural population in India.
The post-lunch session started with a lecture on ‘Origin and the Dynamics of the Solar System – Some Unsolved Mysteries’ by Prof. Amitabha Ghosh, former Professor of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur. He explained the motion characteristics of the solar system and the unexplained anomalies.
Prof. Sushanta Duttagupta, former Director IISER Kolkata and former Vice – Chancellor, Visva-Bharti, Shantiniketan concluded the lecture series for the day with a talk on ‘Frictional Mechanics of an Electron in Electric and Magnetic Fields’. He elaborated on many interesting phenomena that result from this along with practical applications. The most awaited event of the day was the drama ‘Aryabhatta’ written by Prof. Amitabha Ghosh, former Professor of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur and performed by the students of HSMS. The drama portrayed the contribution of Aryabhatta, the first of the major mathematician –astronomers from the classical age of Indian Mathematics and Astronomy. He was also one of the early physicists who gave the digit ‘0’ to the world.
The audience participated enthusiastically for the entire programme and the students posed different questions to the speakers which surely helped to widen their knowledge horizon.
3-day INSA FELLOW LECTURE PROGRAMME AT HEMSHEELA MODEL SCHOOL, DURGAPUR
A series of lecture programmes in collaboration with Indian National Science Academy has been organised in the school auditorium at the J.N. Avenue campus. Students from classes 9 to 12, teachers of Hem Sheela Model School and many other prominent schools of the region participated in the programme. On 5th August , the programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp followed by a cultural performance by Hem Sheela students. Ms. Anindita Home Choudhury, Principal, HSMS welcomed the eminent dignitaries. The inaugural address was delivered by Prof. Anupam Basu, Director, NIIT Durgapur on Language and Science.
The first session started with a lecture by Prof. Ashok Kr. Mallik, Retd. Prof. IIT Kanpur, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering on the “Magical Mathematics of Ramanujan”, the second session of the day started with the lecture by Prof. Sushanta Duttagupta, Founder Director, IISER, Kolkata and the former Vice-Chancellor, Visva-Bharti, Shantiniketan who spoke on “Relativistic Mechanics of an Electron in Electric and magnetic fields”.
This was followed by a lecture on “Moving with the Flow” by Prof. Suman Chakraborty, Prof. of Mechanical Engineering and Dean of Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy at IIT Kharagpur. The concluding event on the first day was a presentation of songs on the topic “Rabindranath and Science” by Prof. Duttagupta and on the components of Rabindra sangeet by the students of Sangeet Bhavan, Visva-Bharti, Shantiniketan.
The teachers, staff and students of Hem Sheela Model school Durgapur enthusiastically celebrated the International Yoga Day in the school on 21 June’19. At the very outset, the Principal in her speech emphasised the importance of regular yoga practice to lead a better mental, physical and intellectual health and how it positively changes the lifestyle for better well being. Mentors from “Art of living” performed various types of yoga which were repeated by the performing students and teachers. The importance of these exercises was explained simultaneously. The Omkar chanting, white dress altogether reflected an altogether different ambience. The session ended on a final note to practice it every day to achieve the perfect harmony of body, mind and soul.
A spectacular seminar was conducted on 20th August from 10:30am in the auditorium. The speakers were Dr. Lipika Adhya(Eminent Physicist of B.P Podder University of Management & science Kolkata & Dr. Samir Adhya ( Indian Institute of chemical Biology , Kolkata ), Madam Adhya’s topic was to train your brain & mould your destiny .Dr. Samir Adhya Spoke on disadvantages of plastic & its effect in todays world. The one day seminar concluded successfully enabling the students to understand the integration of science
